Bamboo-fusion (R) Massage Class

On our 2nd day of the wonderful warm massage called Bamboo-fusion. It's a small class for continuing education for massage therapists--we never have more than 10 therapists in class.

Why learn bamboo-fusion massage? Because:

Discount for bamboo class next week

What's the deal for? The bamboo tools the massage therapt students take home are on backorder until June. Students who take the class have first priority in receiving the tools as they're included in the cost of class.

Why bother with CEU classes?

Taking a massage class (or more!) shouldn't be done just because you need the CEUs for your national certification or insurance renewal. Many massage therapists get in a rut of doing the same thing over and over again. Their clients are happy with the massage, so why bother learning something new?


Are you looking at the clock during your session wondering if it's stopped? Do you have the tools you need to do a great massage? Not physical tools, but skills learned through class or from another massage therapist? If you like work but don't love it anymore, perhaps it's time for a change.

Yes, classes can be expensive. Can you really learn the hands-on skills needed for massage either online or out of a book? Maybe with some things you can. But taking a massage class can really renew your zest for your work again. You'll probably learn a thing or two that you can add to your massages. And maybe your clients will tell you afterwards, "That really was the best massage I've ever had!"

Groupon for Massage

Ever hear of Groupon? It's an online company that works with business to offer their services for usually a huge discount.

Here's how it works:

• The business decides what product it wants to offer and for what price. For instance, I would offer a special for a massage with paraffin dip for 50% off it's regular price.
• The business sets up a minimum of coupons it needs to sell for the coupon to work. It can be 10 coupons, 25, whatever. If that minimum is not met, there's no deal.
• The purpose of that is that the massage company, spa, etc. will have those who WANT the coupon to advertise it on Twitter, FB, MySpace, etc. so that others will see it and hopefully buy it.
• If the minimum number of coupons are sold, "The Deal is On!"
• Coupons are good for a year.

I have been invited to be one of the first massage companies in Cincinnati to have a deal on Groupon. The trick is trying to figure out what deal to give! Remember, I'd offer 50% off a regular service.

Our August 7-8, 2009 Bamboo-fusion class is filling up. Just 3 spots remain.

Can larger therapists take our classes?

Many therapists assume that we have a height and/or weight restriction for our Ashiatsu classes. Not so, brown cow, as the saying goes!

For our Barefoot Basics class, all the strokes are one footed on the posterior side of the body. So if the client needs less pressure, the therapist simply shifts his or her weight onto the foot that's on the table.

Snow or no snow, it's class time!

Despite the level 3 emergency in Cincinnati (which means that all roads are closed except for emergencies), class is on for tomorrow!

The roads should be cleared up by late this afternoon, so hopefully the snow plows won't have too much trouble. Our Bamboo-fusion class scheduled for tomorrow and Friday is still a "go!"

Our Town

Ok, this is totally unrelated to my usual blogs, but I'm just a little pleased with myself. My Bachelor of Arts is in Theatre and Film, so basically I worked as a restaurant manager until I discovered a new love. Massage therapy, that is.

Working in the restaurant business as well as doing massage in the evenings isn't conducive to the theatre life, when most rehearsals are in the evening. But since I've been completely in charge of my own schedule now (thank you loyal clients), my schedule is much more flexible.

Compound that with 2 children old enough to babysit, and violá, time to audition for a play.

I happily received the role of Mrs. Louella Soames, the town gossip, in the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. Opening night is this Thursday, and it runs Thursday - Sunday for the next 3 weeks. The play takes place at the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts on Glenway Avenue in Cincinnati.

In the theatre, we say, "Break a leg!" on opening night. Of course, if I really broke a leg, I'd be in big trouble. But it means "good luck." So break a leg, Mike Fielder (the director), and to the cast and crew as well!

Bamboo-Fusion continued

Petite in stature, Nathalie began to experience pain in her hands within only 2 months of doing traditional massage. As a Thai therapist, Nathalie sometimes did back walking while using a bamboo pole for balance. She discovered the hands-on approach with bamboo when one of her larger male clients kept asking for deeper pressure in his upper trapezius.

Bamboo class instructor training

Just a quick note to say that I'm heading off to Florida in March to do my instructor training for Bamboo-Fusion.

I'm really looking forward to the warm weather and to receiving bamboo massage from the founder, Nathalie Cecilia. I should be able to begin teaching Bamboo massage in the Midwest in late spring or early summer.
